0-60 with Platform9 and OpenStack: A Hands-On-Lab for VMware Admins
Created as a joint project between NASA and Rackspace in 2010, OpenStack was devised as an inexpensive open-source alternative to VMware. In spite of this positive original intention, however, OpenStack’s initial promise didn’t fully materialize. While it found success within a specific niche market, it required organizations to have Linux experts on staff. Moreover, its open-source nature raised security concerns among C-level executives.
Platform9, a company that’s been around for about a decade and one of our partners in the virtualization space, has made OpenStack easy and consumable. Platform9 offers a seamless process to deploy OpenStack on cloud platforms or on-premises, all managed through a cloud interface accessible from any device, including smartphones. Migrating existing VMs to OpenStack via Platform9 is straightforward.
With Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware complete and new pricing models in place, many enterprises are reconsidering their options and actively looking for a new platform.
iShift and Platform9 are hosting a hands-on lab specifically designed for VMware administrators curious about exploring KVM/OpenStack as an alternative hypervisor. This workshop is led by engineers from Platform9 and iShift who have extensive experience with VMware. The goal is to offer practical experience transitioning to OpenStack, best practices for scaling and optimizing performance, and guidance on navigating its complexities.
